Thingvellir National Park is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Iceland. Visitors flock there all year around to enjoy the landscape, the historical sites and the magnific geological scenery. The word Thingvellir literally means "field of parliament" in Icelandic and it was here that one of the oldest parliaments in the world was founded as early as 930 A.D. Thingvellir was the site of the Icelandic parliament until 1799 when it was moved to Reykjavik. Thingvellir was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, due to its historical and cultural significance as well as its unique geological makeup. Thingvellir is one of the gems in the renown "Golden Circle" conveniently located just 50 km east of the capital city of Reykjavik.
